Rickie will be missed by a great number of people. It will be difficult to imagine PGRS without 730. Rickie taught me alot about being a medic, as I'm sure he did many. I wish we had more people like Rickie who dedicated their lives to serving the people around them. The world would be much better off.

It is hard to say how bad I feel that Rickie is no longer with us. I started in the squad as a junior member and ran with him and Lee Spangler. Rickie taught me a lot about EMS and how to care for patients. He was a great man, medic, and nurse and will be missed.

There is probably a lot of regret floating around, myself included. Rickie's legacy will outlive all of us. There is not one story that involved Rickie that space would allow any of us to fully share. Each one of us will have one.All of us(that knew him) are better providers because of him, even if it's not realized now.So Rickie, may now you can truely rest at peace. nuff' said.

We at Laurel Fork Rescue wish to convey to Rickie's mother and family, and to all of you, his good friends and fellow squad members at PGRS, our profound sorrow and feeling of loss at the passing of our good friend and mentor, Rickie Payne. Rickie has touched each of our lives in ways no other could, and made all of us better healthcare providers in one way or another. He will live on through the care and giving he showed to all of us, which we in turn can give to others.

Ricky was and awesome person, not only that he was an awesome paramedic and nurse. Always willing to help you out if you had a question or needed help with anything. I have had the hornor of taking classes in which he was the instructor, and we took Critical Care Paramedic together. It was always good to see his face when you went into the ED. I am also hornored to call him my friend. You will be greatly missed.

Having known Rickie for many years, its hard for me to put into words the loss that I feel. From the time I first met Rickie he always wanted to help someone. He always had a passion for EMS and becoming a Paramedic. Rickie lead the way for so many others. The world would be a much better place if more people had the dream of wanting to help and give to others. Those of us who knew Rickie are better providers for having known him. If you really want to find your true self, lose yourself in the giving to others. This is how I will always remember my friend. Cana Rescue-418

I remember Ricky form all the different times I was with family members in the ER. He had a way of making you feel that you were going to be taken care of no matter what he had to do. Extremely professional and caring. He always followed rules and regulations that was one of the first things I noticed about him. He is sleeping peacefully, no pain no anxiety awaiting a better world in the resurrection. Psalms 37:10,11

This is a wonderful tribute to a man who lived his work, & loved every minute of it. Ricky will be missed beyond words, he touched so many lives. Ricky was serious about what he did, & when an emergency arose all kidding went aside while he worked diligently. He was a hoot when he wasn't faced with the seriousness of work. I wasn't an ER nurse, but on many occasions I was pulled from the ICU to the ER, & it was always a relief to know that he was there. Also I was privileged enough to teach BLS-CPR, ACLS, & PALS with Ricky, those classes will not be the same w/o him. For stories: #1. I will never forget the bracelet that one ER doc wore. It was WWRD-what would Ricky do! That said so much to see. #2. I will never forget the time that Ricky's vehicle rolled off at the hospital, & nothing could have prepared him for the 'call sheet-report' that was filled out by his co-workers of the squad. He was for once speechless.lol. Rest in peace my friend.

I have been in total denial that Rickie was gone until I watched this beautiful memorial. Thank you Pipers Gap RS for this tribute to my friend of over 20 years. I have know Rickie in all of his different walks in the medical field, I even got to see his dream of becoming a flight nurse become a reality. Rickie was always willing to help and teach anyone who was willing to learn; that is why he was the first one of thought of when I wanted someone to teach basic first aide to my Girl Scout troop a few years ago and of course Rickie was right on board and did a wonderful job. I can not express the pain that I feel in the loss of a wonderful co-worker and friend. Rest in peace Rickie and I will see you on the other side on day.

I took my EMT and several other classes under Rickie. He was always there when you had a question or problem. When Kim was in the hospital in Roanoke I was all alone.Kim was in ICU and I was only aloud to see him 10 minutes twice a day. I called family and no one could be with me. Then Rickie called from work at the hospital(TCRH) and told me he would be down after work to take me to a motel. He didn't want me to walk because it was already dark. I had no transportation because I rode down in the rescue squad. He came back the next day to be with me while Kim was in surgery. He came the next day with his momma to take me home to get my car.He was never to busy for a friend.

I'll never forget the PHTLS class that Rickie was helping teach. He was working one of the testing sites. Well...it was 13 degrees outside, 3 inches of snow on the ground, and still snowing. We had to extricate a lady out of a car. I'll never forget what he told me, this is just like real life, get in there and do a good job. He laughed at my attempts to get the car moved inside :D. So many great memories and stories, but most of all, he helped make me a stronger and more skilled EMT-E. I could never say thank you enough!

I didn't know Rick as well as alot of you and I always felt like that might be my loss. Every time we talked I felt as if I was talking to a friend, and all my instinct saw Rick as a good guy. I have a strong believe in the Bible and it tells us that by taking care of the least among us, we have also taken care of our Lord. Obviously, Rickie Payne was one of those people that our Lord was talking about. While I know that this is an especially hard time for the fine people of Piper's Gap, Grayson-Galax, and Carroll Counties,it is also a hard time for all of us. Our immediate family, the whole Southwest Region of 13 Counties and 3 Cities, has lost one of our own. Rest in Peace Rick, and each of us should never forget the memories and the blessings of the other, people like Rickie Payne, who make us proud to be family. God Bless you and keep me a place in Heaven. You will not be forgotten.

Rickie is a man that you would want to have as a friend, teacher and someone you would look up to! He was always very dedicated and loyal to the ems field. I remember Rickie 18 years ago meeting him Ken Muncy, Jon Delp, Vanetta Delp, Dan Combs. They inspired me to be the best ems provider i could possibly be especially Rickie. He was always there from working with rickie, to a late night rescue call. He was a man full of knowledge and also someone you could talk to. I had to the priviledge to know this great person and to have him as a friend and a mentor throught life. Rickie will be sadly missed! Like many of you I met Rickie in the ER at Twin County Hospital, I was an EMT student and he was very intimidating to me. I was very scared of him (and didn't like him) at first but found myself drawn to his inteligence and teaching ability, within a short time I was working beside him in the ER. I learned quickly that you had to work hard to earn his respect no matter whether you were an EMT, Nurse or Doctor he would put you in your place. I have seen Rickie work day and night when he was much sicker than the patients he was taking care of, but he was always there, and you knew whether in the ER or the back of a truck if "730" was there it was going to be OK. There is no EMS professional in the Twin County more respected than Rickie, like him or not, everyone respected him. I have been to many classes throughout VA and NC and everyone in the EMS circles knew how great of a Paramedic/RN Rickie was. I give Rickie the credit for my career in Emergency Medicine as I am sure many of you do, he has taught me a lot over the years and I am honored that he was my best friend. I will miss his smart remarks, his stern voice, and that look that he had when I was an hour late to meet him. I actually got use to that look and he got use to me being late. I know Rickie is up in heaven with his Dad now looking down on us, and he would tell us to "move along". He always taught with one motto, "do no harm" and if you don't know something, learn it. He practiced what he preached, he was always learning. Rickie became like a brother to me, he was there when all of my kids were born, they still call him "Uncle Rickie" and I know he has been that "Uncle/Brother" to many people in the area. He would do anything you ask of him, thats what a true friend does. There are a few of us who knew just how sick Rickie really was,and with that said I am glad that he is not suffering, he deserves not to be hurting anymore. For those who took cave rescue with us years ago, "Rickie is OK now". Rickie my friend, I will truly miss you, and I know you will be watching over us "24/7" all night long!

I met Rickie almost 20 years ago when I joined Laurel Rescue. Greg was my partner, and on every call we ran in to Rickie. I was amazed at how he could spout out the treatment for anything...like a textbook. I wanted to be just like him. At first he wouldn't talk to me...because with Rickie you had to prove that you knew what you were doing before he would see you as someone other than an "oxygen robber." I used to laugh when he referred to people as "oxygen robbers." I finished nursing and went to work at TCRH, and our paths continued to cross, and eventually he became my friend. I remember he was always there to teach as long as you were willing to learn. He put everything in to his career, and always had a book and was studying something. Despite his many health problems, he never complained, and I've seen him work when he was much sicker than the patients he was taking care of. He absolutely loved EMS and the Galax community. He was hard to get to know, but once he knew and trusted you, he was your friend till the end. There are so many fun times I could mention with him, Greg, Lee, Jon, Dan...and so many others. I'm honored he was my friend, and he will be missed.

I was blessed to have known Rickie both as a Nurse and as an EMT-CT.... He was a great instructor, NREMT-P and RN. I can remember back in the early 90's he taught me ACLS and PALS. He assisted Janie Dillon, RN Nurse Manger of the ED at TCRH in teaching the Cardiac Tech course that I was in as well. I have run many EMS calls with Rickie and was always glad to have his assistance on 10-33 traffic. The last instruction I received from Rickie was in the PHTLS course a couple of years ago. I will always carry with me many memories, EMS instructions and lessons that only Rickie himself could give! God speed Rickie.... and may God Bless your family.

When I first came to work at TCRH I was cold one evening and here come Rickie carrying me a warm blanket to get me warm. I listen to him calling in when coming working with EMS and he his knowledge of the patient he was caring for was excellent. He was a great nurse in the ER very caring of his patients and if needed up front would come running. He will be missed by all who knew him and never forgotten.

Rickie was among the first people I met when I moved to Galax 23 years ago. Through working with Pipers Gap Rescue and the many classes I took that he taught he was an inspiring man. I know he encouraged me in EMS and nursing. Thanks Rickie for shareing your wealth of knowledge with me over the years and teaching me and all the encouragement over the years. Will never forget how you always had time to answer my questions while I was taking EMS and nursing classes and helped me get through it all. There will never be another person, medic or nurse like you and for that the world and our little corner has lost a great man.

I know that this County and area has truly lost one of its founding members in Emergency Services. I know that Rickie has touched someone in every Squad in the County and area. He truly had a desire and passion for what he did. This was always evident in the classes that he taught because he always wanted his students to be the best. There will never be anyone who can fill his shoes. RIP Pipers Gap 730.

It has taken a couple of days to wrap my head around the fact that Rickie is gone...I have known Rickie for 17 years when we began working together in the ED. Through all of that time I watched Rickie reach one goal after another...EMT-P, RN, CEN, and his long-time dream of being a member of a flight crew. Rickie always wanted to make a difference, but not just for himself... and that's where his love for educating shines through. He loved to teach and he did it with passion! If he knew you truly wanted to learn, he was more than willing to share his knowledge! Those of us fortunate enough to work with Rickie are certainly better nurses for it. There was nothing like taking care of a critical patient with Rickie right there with you, with that look of pure determination on his face that he was going to save that patient. He was constantly thinking..."what do we need to do next?" and made those critical times much easier to get through. Rickie was a man of honor and always strived to give back to his community,to make a difference, and to always be there for his friends...and he did that everyday. There were so many days we all knew Rickie didn't feel well. But he never complained, never wanted us to realize how bad he felt. But there were many days I am sure he was sicker than the majority of patients he took care of. That was just who he was. Rickie, I will truly miss you and your absence in our lives will always be felt. Thank you for all of your years of service to this community, to the EMS, and to the ED that you dedicated your career and your life to. May you rest in peace now Rickie...

Rickie was a little intimidating when you first met him but soon you come to understand his real concern for all was to become successful in the field he took so much pride in. Not many but some still VOLUNTEER and to be a part of PGRS for as many years as Rickie did speaks volumes about his concern for his community. Always wanting to help save lives and teach others to be the best they could be doing the same. Needless to say, Rickie was different than many but few had the passion for what he did. I never approached him with a question whether at the PGRS Building or in the ER that he wouldnt take his time to explain or help you out. His knowledge and skills overflowed his cup and luckily he spilled over on those of us lucky enough to know him. He will be greatly missed and I consider myself lucky to have known him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends and the extended family in EMS, PGRS, and TCRH. Tonight he has no pain or illness, for he has a new body and he has gone home, forever, so be not afraid. RIP in Pease PGRS #730 your tour of duty has ended here.

Rickie was family, but we became great friends through " the job". With Rickie people loved him or hated him, not much in between. One thing I'm sure of, there was no one walking this earth asking themselves "I wonder what Rickie thinks about me?" He would tell you exactly what he thought, and I greatly respected that. He'll be greatly missed. God bless you Rick.

Rickie, I can remember some crazy calls we responded on, but I was always so much more relaxed knowing I had Rickie Payne in the back of that ambulance. I knew if the patient stood a chance of living, it was because Rickie was back there with them. I'll admit Rickie and I didn't always see eye to eye on every issue, and we may have had a few debates, but it never caused us to hold a grudge against each other. I just regret not seeing you over the past few years since I had moved away. You were an honor to know, and an honor to work with. Thank you for touching so many lives in such a short period of time on Earth.

I met Rickie through the SwVA Paramedic Program. Rickie was a wonderful preceptor and instructor for the students in the program and his instruction will live on through those that he trained so well during his time with us. He was a wonderful nurse and medic, and will be greatly missed. Family, and friends, I pray that the Good Lord will give you peace and replace all of the hurt that you now feel, with those precious memories of Rickie (and I know you must have a million at least). Your hurt is in God's heart and I pray that HE will bring healing as only HE can. God Bless you!

I met Ricky 20 years ago and we were just starting out in healthcare, it seems only yesterday really. There was a bunch of us that were just beginning our path in healthcare. We all had a lot to learn, but Ricky was ahead of all of us. Ricky and I became friends over the years. Ricky was one of the smartest EMT/Paramedic/RNs that I have ever known. I would have wanted him there in the ambulance or the ED if my family or me was there. He gave 110% all the time to his patients. He gave 110% to the community. He taught many new healthcare employees and EMT the importance of CPR/ACLS/PALS and made them feel more confident, including me. I hope Ricky knew how much he was appreciated while he was here. Rest in Peace and know that you will not be forgotten, your legacy will live on in all that knew you.

Rickie gave of himself in every instance, every day. He was our friend, out mentor, out instructor, someone to lean on and someone who cared. Rickie gave so selflessly to all of us and he will be sadly missed, but, because of him, countless lives have been and will be saved. Thank you, Rickie. I worked with Rickie in the good ole days when we were all family in the ER at work and at home. I observed Ricky grow into the professional role that he mastered very well. When Rickie was working in the field as a EMT you knew exactly what to expect to come through the ER doors and every thing had been done just so in the field. When working in the ER I was always calm when a code came in because I knew with Rickie by my side we would be the best of the best along with our fellow workers. I feel a great sadness that Rickie is no longer with us .

You'll never be forgotten Rickie! Whenever I'm taking an EMS class and don't do something right or fail a test, I'll be expecting to see your eyes get real big like they did every time you got mad, and hear you ask me "What do you think you did wrong Andrew?" Rickie was a long time friend. We went to high school together and shared many, many memories. We worked together at the Golden Arches (Mcdonalds) and spent many after work hours together along with Jeff Thompkins, Steve Gayheart, Mark Stanley and many others to numerous to mention. We graduated high school in 1980. Rickie had a red Dodge Dart, that we found out couldn't make it up Pilot Mountain, that had a pa/ cb radio that we used to hollor at girls with, cruised Galax in and went to concerts together in. He was a friend who I can say I'm proud of. He helped train my daughter Noelle in the ER, whom I might add is a great nurse now for it. I have so many stories about Rickie, some I had better not tell !!! God rest his soul.

I always looked forward to working with Rickie because I knew he would make me laugh but more than that I knew I was working with the best nurse TCRH has ever had. I'm sure the shifts we worked together were hard on our co-workers because of our constant threats of taking each other out to the heli-pad and that someone would be wearing an iron lung before it was all over. I'll never get to hear him call me "Mongo" again. I'll never get ot hear him tell me, "what are you going to do...reach up and him me in the ankles?" whenever we were giving each other a hard time. It breaks my heart to know these things, but I hope he knows every tear that has been shed and every tear that will still be shed, he deserves. He is irreplaceable. When we would say goodbye to each other, one of us would always say, "love ya" and the other one would say, "mean it". Rickie, I'll say it for both of us now, "love ya...mean it".

I tried to think of my favorite moments with Rickie...there were many! I will always admire the way he cared for his patients. He gave them dignity....even if they didn't seem to have any...he helped them find it. He will truly be missed by all.

Rickie was a fantastic instructor and, even though stern at times, an all around great guy. I learn so much from him and I hate to see that he had to leave us all so young. Rickie, God bless you with all of his glory for your selfless, dedicated volunteer work. God's Speed!

Rickie taught my last EMT class. He was there for the first one. When I had to give up Rescue to help raise my two little granddaughters I talked to Rickie about it, and he understood. When my husband was rushed to the ER a few years ago and we nearly lost him, Rickie was there. When I got there he explained every thing that had happened so that I could understand. He was so dedicated and loved his work so much. I miss him.
